The Dennis Mitchell Band

By Dan Golden

"We're having a blast!" declares the leader of the newly-formed, locally based Dennis Mitchell Band. With an all-star lineup comprised of some of the area's finest players, this group is already making waves on the regional festival circuit. Their truly professional presentation and sterling musicianship makes this act stand out amongst the city's numerous quality entertainment collectives.

Hometown "Hero" Dennis Mitchell, a graduate of Milwaukie High School, along with his older brother Mike, shares the main guitar duties. Bass player Todd McPherson also trades off on slide guitar, augmented by keyboardist Steve Miller (no, not that one), who slides into the bass role when needed. Drummer Brian Johnsen, a former classmate of Mitchell's, holds it all together with his energetic and creative "skin slappin'”. The "captain of the ship" though, is the gregarious namesake of the group, who effortlessly holds down the frontman/lead vocalist position. Each of these fine musicians boasts impressive performance resumes. Brother Mike shines as the "Babe Ruth" of the bunch, as a founding member of the legendary Kingsmen of Louie Louie fame.

The band's well-produced, seven-song demo CD and numerous area performances only hint at this group's potential. They utilize a mix of vintage instruments and amps, as well as more modern gear, to conjure up the classic rock and blues sounds of the '60s through the '80s.

The DMB puts on a tightly orchestrated show that speaks to a wide demographic. Dennis' smooth yet commanding vocal work shines through, with strong guitar work adding authority to group's musical blend. While most of the DMB's setlist is currently filled with well-selected cover material, original compositions are being prepared for future inclusion.

Each of the groups’ members brings a large "plate" to the collective band table. Drummer Johnsen's experience playing back-up for both Bachman Turner Overdrive and Pat Travers has prepared him for performance in front of larger crowds. And of course, brother Mike's travels with the Kingsmen since day one exposed him to the mass adulation that brings out the best in most players. All in all, this is as fine a band as you will find anywhere on the planet!

Upcoming appearances at various outdoor festivals this summer should galvanize this act into one of the region's topnotch draws.

The band is performing in Las Vegas and California for the next few weeks, but watch listings for regional upcoming shows.
