SEATTLE SPOTLIGHT:
Tinfed CD
Review
by Patrice Raplee
Up from the depths of the underground's long list of potential rock
gurus, Tinfed is surfacing with a potent new CD entitled Tried +
True.
The convergent evolution of this band caught the attention of Mission
Impossible 2 producers with the track Immune that was chosen
for the movie's soundtrack.
An amalgam of electronic and rock, Tinfed's music is infinitely more
interesting than the typical gak that litters the pop airwaves. Catchy
melodies supported by ardent rhythms flow with a powerful undercurrent
of stratified guitars and tastefully cross-laid electronic programming.
Rey Osburn, the vocal meister of this California-based group, imparts
a rather deep meaning to his lyrics, yet there doesn't seem to be a
pretentious waver in his delivery. Tinfed has seen many incarnations
of itself, some still available out there somewhere in indie land, but
their new CD has hit upon that quasi-magic balance of success.
Part of the magic stems from former keyboardist Ed Buller of the Psychedelic
Furs who is responsible for producing Tried + True. Just about
any tune on the CD might be a just representation of the Band's collective
tour de force, but a few are definitely the type to be played relentlessly.
Arrange and Immune fall into this category with an upbeat
rhythm, abundance of melody and interesting samples.
Drop has a slow, lulling sex appeal that emanates from the bottom
of Osburn's vocal cords with a haunting desire that's contagious. Guitar
work on It's Late is uncomplicated, but catchy and one radio
fans will pick up as a sleeper.
Currently on tour to promote their CD, Tinfed performed at Seattle's
Graceland Club to an appreciative crowd. Somewhat surprised, the audience
was constantly passing the "I can't believe how good these guys
are" look to each other. The Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack
has been a great spin-doctor for Tinfed, but the group once out of the
can is now definitely into the fire!
